Species Notes
1 Common Loon Seen in ocean on estuary tour
2 Least Grebe A couple of sightings, though they were quick ones
3 Pied-billed Grebe One seen final morning in Navojoa
4 Eared Grebe Hundreds!
5 Blue-footed Booby One seen flying soon after arriving at ocean on estuary day
6 American White Pelican Voted # 1 sighting!  Birds lining up in "V" formation was a treat!
7 Brown Pelican Fairly common on coast
8 Double-crested Cormorant The bigger one with bulkier head and neck
9 Neotropic Cormorant The smaller one with slender neck & less orange/yellow on face
10 Magnificent Frigatebird Magnificent!  At ocean.
11 Bare-throated Tiger-Heron Three seen!  Two juveniles (one in scope @ Santa Barbara), 1 ad.
12 Great Blue Heron Common
13 Great Egret Common
14 Snowy Egret Seen here and there at ponds
15 Little Blue Heron Seen best on estuary day, next to Reddish Egrets for comp.
16 Tricolored Heron A few seen while boating in estuary
17 Reddish Egret Two or three seen on estuary day
18 Green Heron A couple of them seen
19 Black-crowned Night Heron Fairly common on this trip
20 Yellow-crowned Night Heron Favors salt water
21 White Ibis First was with next species, then seen again
22 Roseate Spoonbill Five seen perched and flying.  What colors!
23 Wood Stork One seen flying behind 2nd car when arriving at Agiabampo
24 Mallard On float trip
25 Northern Pintail At estuary before getting into pongas
26 American Wigeon Big flock seen on float trip
27 Ring-necked Duck One female seen on final morning in Navojoa
28 Lesser Scaup Most widespread duck species seen on trip
29 Bufflehead Abundant on estuary
30 Red-breasted Merganser Small groups scattered along estuary
31 Ruddy Duck Three seen in small pond returning to Alamos from estuary
32 Black Vulture Fairly common
33 Turkey Vulture Fairly common
34 Osprey A few seen along Rio Mayo, plus one in San Carlos
35 White-tailed Kite Nice views of hovering individual, plus one seen perched
36 Cooper's Hawk One juvenile seen in tree returning from float trip (2nd car only)
37 Common Black Hawk Fairly common along river, plus one at estuary & pair in San C.
38 Harris's Hawk Beautiful bird!  Seen a couple of times perched on phone poles.
39 Gray Hawk Another beautiful raptor.  Seen three days.
40 Red-tailed Hawk A couple seen soaring
41 Crested Caracara Wow!  Maybe a hundred of these.
42 American Kestrel Our smallest falcon, seen fairly often
43 Merlin One seen zipping across river.  Always a good sighting.
44 Peregrine Falcon Four seen on river.  Usually only one or two seen on whole trip.
45 Common Moorhen A couple seen on last morning in Navojoa
46 American Coot In Navojoa
47 Wilson's Plover One seen in Agiabampo after estuary trip
48 Semipalmated Plover Seen in Agiabampo
49 Killdeer A few in shallow muddy flats
50 American Oystercatcher Nice views in scope at Agiabampo
51 Black-necked Stilt A couple of these too
52 Greater Yellowlegs One or two seen
53 Willet Common at estuary, plus one in San Carlos
54 Spotted Sandpiper Fairly common along shores
55 Whimbrel One seen well from pongas walking along in grass
56 Long-billed Curlew Same as with whimbrel
57 Marbled Godwit A number of these were in the further mudflats at Agiabampo
58 Short-billed Dowitcher This is the hump-backed one.
59 Long-billed Dowitcher Both this and previous species together at Agiabampo
60 Parasitic Jaeger New to my Mexico list.  Difficult sighting.
61 Laughing Gull Mostly in winter plummage
62 Bonaparte's Gull A couple of these were around before getting into the pongas
63 Heermann's Gull A pretty gull.  Immatures are dark.  Most common gull.
64 Ring-billed Gull Fairly numerous, with dark ring near tip of bill
65 Yellow-footed Gull Mexican specialty species, easily found in Sea of Cortez
66 Gull-billed Tern Tern with dark bill and legs.  A couple seen in estuary.
67 Caspian Tern Bulky tern with large blood-red bill
68 Royal Tern Slimmer tern with slimmer, orange bill and dark nape
69 Forster's Tern Tern with dark smudge behind eye
70 Rock Pigeon In towns
71 White-winged Dove Fairly common
72 Mourning Dove Scattered about
73 Inca Dove A few seen, some up close at Santa Barbara
74 Common Ground-Dove Seen from boat and in Navojoa
75 White-tipped Dove Large plain dove that frequently walks on ground
76 White-fronted Parrot One or two distant sightings.  Usually better.
77 Squirrel Cuckoo Most uncommon sighting!  Only one boat got views, though.
78 Greater Roadrunner Seen only by Sarah
79 Broad-billed Hummingbird A few seen, one by petroglyphs
80 Violet-crowned Hummingbird Seen from boat at flowers on bank
81 Belted Kingfisher Common
82 Green Kingfisher Nice to get good views of these, too
83 Gila Woodpecker A few seen in thornscrub habitat
84 Ladder-backed Woodpecker One or two seen
85 Gilded Flicker Seen by some
86 Tufted Flycatcher Nice bird!  One nicely seen in Aduana, then on float trip.
87 Greater Pewee In Aduana
88 Gray Flycatcher A couple seen.  Best was at lunch on float trip.
89 Pacific-slope Flycatcher Fairly common empid with pointy eye-ring
90 Black Phoebe Common near water
91 Say's Phoebe One seen well at Santa Barbara, plus in Navojoa
92 Vermilion Flycatcher Common on river and elsewhere
93 Ash-throated Flycatcher One seen in Santa Barbara
94 Nutting's Flycatcher A couple seen.  "Wheep" call heard a few times.
95 Great Kiskadee Fairly common
96 Social Flycatcher Fairly common
97 Cassin's Kingbird A few seen
98 Thick-billed Kingbird Nice views in Aduana Wash
99 Western Kingbird Some seen
100 Northern Rough-winged Swallow Best views were of perched birds in Navojoa
101 Black-throated Magpie-Jay Voted # 2 sighting!  First flock in Aduana, then along river.
102 Sinaloa Crow Big flocks seen
103 Chihuahuan Raven Some ravens were this species
104 Common Raven More common raven species
105 Verdin One heard at 5-striped site

107 Cactus Wren Seen on last day
108 Canyon Wren Heard in Aduana
109 Happy Wren Only heard.  A skulking species that sometimes cooperates.

111 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Fairly common
112 Black-capped Gnatcatcher Fairly common, makes "mewing" call
113 Northern Mockingbird Quite common
114 Loggerhead Shrike A few seen
115 European Starling One seen at Pemex station
116 Mangrove Vireo Seen up close by first boat on estuary trip.  Missed by others.
117 Bell's Vireo Seen two days
118 Orange-crowned Warbler One seen at boat take-out point, also in Navojoa
119 Mangrove (Yellow) Warbler Seen well by all on estuary trip
120 Yellow-rumped Warbler A handfull were in Aduana
121 Black-throated Gray Warbler One seen near petroglyphs
122 Wilson's Warbler Seen twice
123 Northern Cardinal One seen in Aduana, one at boat take-out point
124 Varied Bunting Male seen early on float trip in tiptop of tree
125 Five-striped Sparrow Great views on hillside on road to Navojoa
126 Lark Sparrow Seen a couple of times
127 Lark Bunting Flock at lunch spot on drive home
128 White-crowned Sparow Heard going through toll booth!
129 Red-winged Blackbird Large flock of females wheeling about on drive back from estuary
130 Brewer's Blackbird Flocks seen mostly along Highway 15

132 Brown-headed Cowbird Seen by some
133 Streak-backed Oriole Nice views in San Carlos, plus others later
134 House Finch Only seen once!
135 Lesser Goldfinch Small flock seen at boat take-out point
